5th Regional Mapping Community Hybrid meeting for the South and West Pacific

Seabed 2030 is a collaborative project between GEBCO and the Nippon Foundation with the aim of facilitating the complete mapping of the ocean floor by the year 2030. Regional Data Centres have been established with the task of identifying existing data from their assigned regions and compiling these into regional gridded bathymetric datasets.

The Seabed 2030 South and West Pacific Centre (SaWPaC) is responsible for 124M km2 of ocean from the west coast of South America to east coast of Australia and north to Japan, Korea and China. It includes the Exclusive Economic Zones of 39 countries as well as a large region “Beyond National Jurisdiction”. The Centre is hosted at the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research in New Zealand (NIWA) and coordinated by a team from NIWA, GNS Science Te Pū Ao and Toitū Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand (LINZ).

The 5th Regional Mapping Community hybrid meeting for the South and West Pacific will be hosted by the Peruvian Hydrographic Office between 12-14 July 2023, both in person and virtually for those unable to attend. 

The meeting objectives are: 

• Review the progress to date with the Seabed 2030 project,
•  Identify sources of bathymetric data,
• Discuss methods and protocols of data sharing, and management,
• Identify regional priority areas and identify upcoming mapping expeditions.
• Open data download and use workshop.

We encourage participants to present in either English or Spanish. Translation services are available to all participants. Please find further information on how to secure a presentation slot in the 2nd circular letter.

This year, the event will also include a full day workshop where you will learn everything about accessing and utilising open data and tools from GEBCO and IHO-DCDB. *Please note that the workshop will be in person only.
