Jamie McMichael-Phillips

Project Director

Jamie McMichael-Phillips is the Director of The Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project.

A hydrographic surveyor with more than 38 years’ experience, Jamie is a former Royal Navy Captain whose career has included service as a Charge Surveyor leading hydrographic and oceanographic survey missions, command at sea, leadership of a joint UK/US team on overseas operations, and senior responsibility for UK defence geospatial strategy and planning. He later served as UK Deputy National Hydrographer and held senior roles in international geospatial engagement, including developing government-to-government relationships.

Jamie has extensive experience of international hydrographic cooperation and capacity development. Prior to taking up his current role, he chaired the International Hydrographic Organization’s Worldwide ENC Database Working Group for more than nine years, helping to oversee the development of global coverage of electronic navigational charts required for safe navigation at sea.
