Prof. Martin Jakobsson is Professor of Marine Geology and Geophysics at the Department of Geological Sciences, Stockholm University, Sweden. His research includes the oceanographic and geological history of oceans, with a focus on Polar Oceans, their sea ice and marine ice sheets. He applies geophysical mapping methods to study seafloor morphology and has specialized in the development of Digital Bathymetric Models (DBMs) from a mixture of data sources.

Martin has participated in more than 10 international icebreaker expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic and has visited the North Pole in 2005, 2004 and 1996. Martin is the main compiler of the International Bathymetric Chart of the Arctic Ocean (IBCAO) and serves as the Chairman of the IBCAO Editorial Board. He is also a previous Vice Chairman of the General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans (GEBCO) Guiding Committee. Since 2016 he has been the Vice President for the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

He began his career in 2000, when he joined the Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping at the University of New Hampshire, USA. He returned in 2004 to Stockholm University for a Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences Research Fellow position and in 2009 was promoted to full professor in marine geology and geophysics. In 2011, he was awarded the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) medal in recognition of exceptional and sustained scientific contributions to the understanding of the Arctic. In 2013 he was elected as a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences' Class for geosciences as well as for the Royal Society of Naval Sciences.

Martin completed his PhD in 2000 at the Department of Geological Sciences from Stockholm University.
