The Nippon Foundation – GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project has the mission to inspire the complete mapping of the world’s ocean by 2030 and to compile all bathymetric data into the freely available GEBCO Ocean Map. The community of seafloor mappers is a key element to the advancement of the work and source for fruitful collaboration and cooperation. An outreach session with Nippon Foundation GEBCO Training Alumni was organized by the Atlantic and Indian Ocean Regional Center on August 25th, 2021 and brought alumni from Egypt, India, Kenya, Malaysia and Pakistan together to discuss updates on seafloor mapping in their countries and respective areas of work. To support their actions within the community, the Center developed and provided simple documents highlighting the current coverage of mapped areas in their region according to the GEBCO 2021 grid. These documents also include descriptions of why mapping the seabed is important and suggestions for actions stakeholders could take to contribute to the project.
