The Atlantic and Indian Oceans Regional Center for the Nippon Foundation – GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project is holding its Atlantic and Indian Oceans Regional Mapping Community Virtual Meeting on July 26 -27 2022

Seabed 2030 is a collaborative project between Nippon Foundation and GEBCO with the aim of facilitating the complete mapping of the ocean floor by the year 2030 and compiling all bathymetric data into the freely available GEBCO map. Regional centers have been established to engage with communities and initiatives and promote collaboration and coordination.

The Atlantic and Indian Oceans Regional Center (AIORC) is responsible for ~140.7 million km2 of ocean, which spans the coastlines of 117 countries. The center is based in the United States at Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory.

The goals of the meeting will be:

  • Review and discuss the advances of seafloor mapping within the Region
  • Learn about mapping activities/ projects in the region,
  • Identify sources of bathymetric data,
  • Collecting ideas and suggestions for a standardized protocol for data sharing within the region,
  • Prioritizing identified areas of interest for mapping.

Below is the agenda slated to run from 07:00 – 09:30 EDT on both days in order to accommodate participation from varying time zones across the Atlantic and Indian Ocean region. Zoom details will be shared in advance of the meeting.
